FYI, this story is more than a year old

Cars are about more than just sleek looks and speed many of us need something practical, that won't bankrupt us in the process of buying it.

EV manufacturers understand that fact and as such there are several clean green EVs that cater to more than just the extravagant billionaire.

Here are three practical electric cars that won't cost you an arm and a leg:

The e-Golf

The new fully electric e-Golf is powered by lithium-ion batteries and comes with an electric motor producing 100kW of power.

This is a five seat electric car that is designed as part of the highly successful Golf family and is produced alongside the more conventionally powered Golfs.

The healthy amount of torque from the e-Golf's electric motor makes it a good fit for city driving.

The e-Golf offers four unique levels of regenerative braking, meaning the driver can control the rate of battery recharge.

This feature will be helpful in slow-moving traffic helping to extend the car's range and enhance its efficiency.

The e-Golf will have a range exceeding 200 km.

The e-Golf will be able to reach 80% battery charge in just over half an hour.

The car also comes with all the latest self-driving and safety features including lane assist, emergency brake, multi collision brake, adaptive cruise control, rear view camera and driver fatigue detection.

The BMW i3

The BMW i3 with eDrive is designed for the pulsating life in the big city.

Driven by a fully emission-free electric motor, the BMW i3 guarantees urban mobility wherever you need it.

This car has a range of up to 160 km.

The i3 accelerates from 0 to 100 in just 7.9 seconds.

The BMW i3 can be charged quickly, easily, and conveniently at home using a wall-box or the charging cable.

The optional range extender for the BMW i3 gives it an increased range of up to 340 km.

Tesla Model S

The Model S is by far the most expensive of the cars on this list, yet it is also the most practical boasting a massive range of up to 500 km.

The Model S has the hardware needed for full self-driving capability at a safety level substantially greater than that of a human driver.

The Model S is designed from the ground up to be the safest car on the road.

The car uses enhanced autopilot and the latest software update ensures it now has auto-steer at speeds of up to 150 kmh.

The Model S also features an auto lane change system and automatic emergency braking.

The Model S' 17-inch touch screen controls most of the car's functions.

Opening the all glass panoramic roof, customising the automatic climate control, and changing the radio station all happen with a swipe or a touch.
