DDI sector in need of understanding

FYI, this story is more than a year old

Companies should be adopting new DDI services quicker than they currently are, says solutions provider, Infoblox.

Towards the end of 2009, Gartner recognised the importance of core network services like DNS, DHCP and IPAM in a MarketScope report. It used the term "DDI" to represent this emerging technology category.

Infoblox offers solutions that it says can reduce network expenses and increase network availability by automating key components of infrastructure, including IP address management (IPAM), DNS and DHCP.

The firm says that spreadsheets have traditionally been used for the task of monitoring what IPs are assigned to what devices and it believes that today's managers may see this type of DDI automation as a threat.

Richard Kagan, EVP and General Manager, said that Infoblox has essentially turned a free product, which comes with MS Small Business Server, into a $100 million business. “We’re competing with an absence of visible pain,” he said, noting that most DDI related problems aren't easily identified.

While companies in New Zealand are starting to adopt DDI solutions - Kagan named Vodafone, ANZ Bank and Westpac - he said he would like to see more understanding of the new category from end users and channel partners.
