IBM names first female CEO
Thu, 27th Oct 2011
FYI, this story is more than a year old

After 100 years in business, IBM has appointed its first ever female CEO, with sales, marketing & strategy chief Virginia ‘Ginni’ Rometty due to take up the role in January.

Rometty will be one of a small group of female technology CEOs, the most prominent being Meg Whitman, the former eBay boss hired last month by HP to replace Leo Apotheker.

Carol Bartz would have been another, but she was fired from her role as CEO of Yahoo.

Rometty joined IBM in 1981 as a systems engineer, and says there is no greater privilege than to be asked to lead the company.

She will take over from Sam Palmisano, who has been CEO since 2002 and is retiring due to turning 60 this year.
