Nick Gibbs named Chief Operating Officer at FIRST Security

Wed, 22nd Oct 2025

FIRST Security has announced the appointment of Nick Gibbs as its new Chief Operating Officer.

Gibbs joins the executive leadership team after spending seven years at FIRST Security, where he has held multiple senior roles and been recognised for his contributions to service development and partnership building within the sector.

He brings over 25 years of experience to the COO position, having begun his security career as a frontline officer while completing his Bachelor of Applied Science. Following these early years, Gibbs worked with Chubb Protective Services as a contractor and then operated Masterguard Fire & Security for 12 years as owner and manager.

FIRST Security operates more than 30 branches throughout New Zealand, from Invercargill to Kaitaia, and employs around 1800 staff. The company also maintains a fleet of 230 patrol vehicles and provides continuous service throughout the year.

Leadership perspectives

Sara Norrie, Chief Executive Officer of FIRST Security, commented on Gibbs' appointment and track record.

Nick's appointment to the role reflects his outstanding track record of operational excellence and strategic leadership. Throughout his tenure with FIRST Security, he has been a vocal advocate for raising professional standards in the industry and has been responsible for ensuring outstanding service delivery for our clients across the country.

Gibbs commented on the priorities and values he plans to bring to the role, drawing on his background both as a practitioner and sector advocate.

I am excited for the opportunity to continue supporting frontline staff and grow recognition of the security profession throughout Aotearoa. It is a privilege to work with FIRST Security to strengthen capability and credibility across the security sector.

Transition and experience

Gibbs steps into the COO role as he succeeds Steven Sullivan, who is departing the post to return to Melbourne. Sullivan has spent six years with FIRST Security and is set to remain until the end of December to assist with the leadership transition.

Norrie highlighted Sullivan's contributions to the organisation and the importance of a seamless transition of responsibilities.

Steven will remain with FIRST Security until the end of December to ensure a smooth transition. He leaves the business in a strong position, and we are grateful for the contribution he has made to the company during his time with us. We are looking forward to working with Nick in his new capacity as COO.

Industry involvement

In addition to his responsibilities at FIRST Security, Nick Gibbs holds a board position with the New Zealand Security Association. This role supports his continued involvement in national efforts to enhance the professionalism and standards of the security sector.

The company's leadership transition represents an ongoing focus on operational standards and industry engagement, reflecting priorities expressed by both Norrie and Gibbs in their statements regarding the future direction of the business and wider sector.
