A judge in Albuquerque has issued a temporary ban preventing BlackBerry maker Research In Motion from using the name it originally gave to its forthcoming operating system.

RIM announced it would release a new operating system in October. However, the name, BBX, turned out to be a trademark of software firm Basis International, who have been using it since 1985.

The ruling comes as the BlackBerry maker hosts its Asian DevCon developer conference in Singapore. The new OS will now be referred to as BlackBerry 10, RIM has announced.

The setback is just one more problem for the former smartphone powerhouse, which has been struggling to compete with devices running iOS and Android.
