The small business owner: Gary Bottomley

01 Jul 06

Millennium Technology was established by Gary Bottomley in 1992. Within ten years Bottomley operated a total of four stores servicing the Waikato and Bay of Plenty region.

“It got to the point where the management and control of remote locations required putting in additional infrastructure,” he says.

Combined with personal reasons for needing to downsize Bottomley decided to sell Millennium Computers but keep Recycled Technology.

“We found that all but one of the Millennium businesses were purchased by staff. After the sale I was at a bit of a loose end and Recycled Technology had always been a viable business, so I put my efforts into that.”

Despite having set Millennium up from scratch Bottomley says he always looked at the stores from a business rather than a personal level.

“Anyone thinking of selling their business should remember that, from the start, it has to be designed to be sold. From the beginning you have to put in the systems and procedures that make it successful.”

Although the business model for Recycled Technology lends itself to further expansion Bottomley says he has no intention of extending beyond the current Hamilton and Rotorua stores.

“I’m at the point where I’d rather be comfortable and have a quality of life than spend all my time on the business.”
