Amazon Q Business launches in AWS's Sydney region

Yesterday

Amazon Web Services (AWS) has announced that its generative AI-powered assistant, Amazon Q Business, is now available in the AWS Asia Pacific (Sydney) Region.

Amazon Q Business is aimed at helping employees become more data-driven, enhancing their ability to generate content and make more informed and timely decisions using company knowledge and data. Leveraging an organisation's data and systems, the assistant is designed to provide quick and accurate answers, streamline problem-solving, and generate content that may benefit workflow efficiency.

According to AWS, employees often spend significant time dealing with repetitive tasks such as searching fragmented data sources. Amazon Q Business seeks to address this by making generative AI accessible to all employees within an enterprise, facilitated by enterprise access controls that safeguard content access according to user permissions. This ensures that employees can receive relevant answers to inquiries, with citations for added transparency.

Amazon Q Business enables employees to generate varied types of content and connects with over 40 popular enterprise systems, including Amazon Simple Storage Service (Amazon S3), Microsoft 365, and Salesforce. Nam Je Cho, Director of Solutions Architecture at AWS Australia and New Zealand, highlighted the impact of Amazon Q Business, stating, "We are empowering Australian customers and partners across all industries to transform their operations through generative AI and Amazon Q Business. Amazon Q Business represents a fundamental shift in workplace productivity, providing secure, comprehensive answers with citations and intelligent document summarisation. Teams can now access and analyse information faster than ever before, enabling data-driven decisions that drive business value. From streamlining customer service to accelerating research and development, Amazon Q Business helps organisations optimise their processes while maintaining enterprise-grade security."

Various sectors, from financial institutions to healthcare providers and HR teams, are reportedly seeing improvements in workplace productivity with the assistance of Amazon Q Business. This includes enhancing operations like risk assessment documentation and patient care coordination. AWS cites examples within Amazon itself, where Amazon Q Business has facilitated the generation of over 100,000 account summaries for the AWS Sales team and reduced technical investigation time by over 450,000 hours collectively.

Arcanum AI CEO Asa Cox commented on the accessibility of Amazon Q Business, particularly for small and medium-sized businesses, stating, "Implementing enterprise-grade generative AI may seem out of reach for small and medium-sized businesses. We've transformed this perception by helping companies across manufacturing, construction, and professional services modernise their operations with Amazon Q Business. Its ability to automate manual processes while maintaining security and compliance delivers significant productivity gains and often saving hours of manual work daily. Customers are growing twice as fast without adding headcount, cutting quote times in half to win 25% more deals, and reducing report generation from two weeks to just two days. Our remote deployment model ensures quick implementation, and as we expand our industry connectors and AI assistant libraries, we're positioned to help even more businesses transform their operations through accessible, practical generative AI solutions."

Phil Duke, Ingram Micro Senior General Manager Cloud ANZ, expressed enthusiasm about the potential for Amazon Q Business to aid partners, saying, "As a global technology distributor and solutions aggregator, Ingram Micro is excited to bring Amazon Q Business to our vast network of partners in Australia and New Zealand. We believe that AI-powered apps and solutions can enable our channel partners to boost their operational efficiency and deliver enhanced value to their customers. Amazon Q Business has potential to help our partners streamline their workflows, improve decision-making processes, and reduce time spent on routine tasks. With Amazon Q Business AI apps, our partners will be able to create customised solutions which in turn may help them address specific business challenges and scale their operations effectively. As organisations continue to embrace AI-driven digital transformation, Ingram Micro is committed to empowering our partners with solutions like Amazon Q Business that drive innovation and business growth."

The new functionality allows customers and partners to use cross-region inference profiles, routing inference requests to the optimal AWS Region. This strategy helps minimise latency and improve user experience while also controlling costs, as charges are applied only to the source region. Customers concerned with data residency can choose to operate and store Amazon Q Business workloads solely within the AWS Sydney Region.

AWS continues its efforts to contribute to the digital economy in Australia by consistently supporting the use of AI and cloud technologies. The company has invested more than AUD $9.1 billion locally since 2012 and aims to expand further with investments exceeding AUD $13.2 billion by 2027. Alongside financial contributions, AWS has trained over 400,000 individuals in Australia in cloud skills since 2017.
