LF Broadband & WBA unite for seamless broadband future

Today

LF Broadband and the Wireless Broadband Alliance have announced a partnership to advance open-source and standards-based wireless broadband solutions.

This collaboration enhances connectivity, interoperability, and open source development within the global broadband sector. LF Broadband, known for fostering open source broadband access, is collaborating with the Wireless Broadband Alliance, an organisation dedicated to ensuring seamless and secure wireless connectivity.

The partnership between these entities aims to foster collaboration between open source and wireless broadband communities in a bid to accelerate the development and deployment of carrier-grade broadband solutions. LF Broadband's initiatives include the SEBA reference design for open broadband networks and the VOLTHA open source project, which focuses on virtualising multi-vendor Passive Optical Network (PON) systems.

On the other hand, the Wireless Broadband Alliance collaborates with service providers and technology companies to promote seamless Wi-Fi experiences through efforts such as OpenRoaming and operator-managed Wi-Fi standards.

Linux Foundation General Manager of Networking, Edge & Access, Arpit Joshipura, said, "This partnership is a natural step toward enhancing broadband networks with intelligent, open, and interoperable solutions due to the alignment of goals shared by LF Broadband and WBA. By bringing together open source innovation and industry standards, we aim to drive the next generation of broadband connectivity."

Tiago Rodrigues, CEO of the Wireless Broadband Alliance, commented, "Collaboration is key to realising the vision of a truly seamless wireless broadband experience. By working together with LF Broadband, we can align industry standards and open-source initiatives to accelerate innovation in areas such as OpenRoaming, Quality of Service (QoS), and Quality of Experience (QoE) strategies across key industry groups."

The partnership will focus on several important areas. These include industry positioning, coordinating messaging and strategy to enhance awareness and adoption of modular, efficient broadband networks. Furthermore, the organisations will engage in joint speaking opportunities and demonstrations, focusing on Linux-based reference designs to highlight broadband technologies.

Another focal area will be the advancement of standards and specifications to ensure smooth Wi-Fi experiences, particularly concerning operator-managed Wi-Fi and cross-industry QoS and QoE strategies.
