Commvault unveils Unity platform for unified multi-cloud data protection

Thu, 13th Nov 2025

Commvault has introduced the Commvault Cloud Unity platform, targeting organisations operating in cloud-first and hybrid environments.

Centralised protection

The platform aims to centralise data resilience operations, providing unified coverage across multiple clouds, regions, and on-premises environments, including data centres and edge locations. 86% of enterprises now utilise multi-cloud environments, with significant proportions of cloud expenditure reportedly wasted due to limited transparency regarding data protection and workloads.

Commvault's latest solution provides a central point from which companies can monitor and manage protected and unprotected workloads. Its interface offers a consolidated view of risk exposure and helps IT teams to identify gaps in data protection coverage across the cloud portfolio.

Rajiv Kottomtharayil, Chief Product Officer at Commvault, said, "We want to meet cloud-first and hybrid customers where they are today and will be tomorrow. That means giving enterprises the speed, precision, visibility, and confidence to protect, recover, and rebuild their data and applications anywhere in the cloud all via one simple, intelligent experience."

AI-assisted discovery

The new release features AI-driven discovery and classification of workloads. The platform automatically finds workloads across an organisation's cloud estate and can recommend protection policies aligned with classification requirements. This supports compliance initiatives and helps organisations reduce the time to onboard new workloads for protection.

The AI-generated recommendations are designed to help companies adapt quickly in response to changing operational needs. The platform's reporting capabilities give IT teams deeper insights into which workloads are protected, under-protected, or at risk.

Cost efficiency

An integrated Total Cost of Ownership (TCO) analysis tool enables organisations to forecast potential savings by shifting workloads to be protected within Commvault's Cloud platform. The system displays data on both unprotected and cloud-protected workloads, including the expected TCO impact.

This transparency around data and workload protection costs is intended to support IT budget decision-making and resource allocation, especially as enterprises look to optimise their cloud spend.

Hybrid coverage

The Unity platform extends its protection to on-premises environments and edge locations in addition to cloud infrastructure. This allows centralised governance and management for data stored in dispersed and hybrid IT environments.

The service is compatible with over 160 cloud regions and can protect more than 200 discrete cloud services, reflecting the breadth of coverage that multi-cloud organisations require for modern operations.

Cyber resilience integration

The platform offers additional cyber resiliency features, with capabilities that go beyond backup solutions typically offered by hyperscale cloud providers. Commvault's offering is positioned to help organisations guard against cyber attacks and data loss across all environments, leveraging integrated security analytics and recovery options.

"Simplified onboarding for every workload - powered by AI-enabled discovery and recommendations within a unified cloud experience is a true game changer. We will instantly see anomalies, identify unprotected data, and make smarter, faster decisions - all while driving lower TCO," said Hamzah Mahafzah, Enterprise Architecture Director, Najm.

An analysts view

"Enterprises today are evolving from managing data in silos to orchestrating it across diverse cloud environments. The Commvault Cloud Unity platform release advances this shift by streamlining management, helping enterprises close protection gaps, optimizing costs, and transforming cloud native protection from an operational burden to a strategic advantage," said Shelly Kramer, Principal Analyst, Kramer and Co.

Availability

The Unity platform is accessible through both the Microsoft Azure and Amazon Web Services marketplaces. This supports accelerated procurement and deployment for customers already committed to major public clouds.
