HPE unveils HPE GreenLake for Block Storage Release 3
Thu, 22nd Feb 2024

Hewlett Packard Enterprise (HPE) has revealed the latest update of HPE GreenLake for Block Storage, identified as Release 3. This is centred around the HPE Alletra Storage MP, considered to be the first scale-out disaggregated block storage in the industry. Such a technology grants enterprises the ability to independently scale capacity and performance.

HPE GreenLake for Block Storage employs a shared-everything storage architecture. This novel block storage offering delivers extreme resiliency and performance streamlined for modern mission-critical workloads. Crucially, it recreates an on-premises cloud experience and efficient scale.

"As enterprises continue to drive data-driven modernisation, many are faced with legacy data storage complexities slowing down their progress," noted Justin Chiah, Vice President and General Manager, Data Services and Storage, Asia Pacific, Hewlett Packard Enterprise.

"The release 3 of HPE GreenLake for Block Storage built on HPE Alletra Storage MP represents a huge step forward as we continue to expand the HPE GreenLake for Block Storage offerings to deliver significant benefits in scale, performance and availability," Chiah says.

The latest Release includes key upgrades over its predecessor. For instance, it introduces new multi-node switched models. These are designed to produce double the performance and two-and-a-half times the capacity. The Release also includes a new warranty program for quadruple data compression, ensuring improved cost efficiency.

Hewlett Packard Enterprise’s new architecture aims to offer a solution to the complexities of managing and maintaining legacy storage systems. This is achieved by allowing enterprises to separately add additional controllers for increased performance and, when needed, additional drives to provide more capacity for applications.

HPE GreenLake for Block Storage Release 3 additionally includes two- and four-controller node switch models, offering support of up to eight JBOF expansion bays. This enables users to scale from 15.36 TB to around 2.8 PB without disruption.

There are also advancements in AI-based performance reporting and analytics. These function to predict and prevent disruptions before they occur, significantly reducing the need to address problematic instances.

HPE GreenLake for Block Storage MP offers multiple technologies to reduce and aggregate data. These include deduplication with express indexing, an extremely efficient compression algorithm, data packing, hardware-accelerated and reservation-free thin provisioning, and virtual copy. These technologies improve economics without sacrificing performance by making the most of flash capacity and improving flash media endurance. Release 3 comes with a 4:1 data aggregation guarantee, which is calculated as the ratio between usable and effective capacity across all collapsible data.
