Samsung buys Boxee, but what about D-Link?

FYI, this story is more than a year old

Samsung has acquired media and entertainment start-up firm Boxee, potentially leaving current hardware maker D-Link out in the cold.

Believed to be for around US$30m, the South Korean company has already issued its first order of business - shutting down the cloud DVR service within the business.

After being released a few months ago, the cloud service launched a product called Boxee Cloud DVR - offering five hours of storage per month plus recording capabilities.

That will all be gone by July 10 however, after the company released a statement to the press.

"Joining Samsung means we will be able to work on products that marry the best hardware and software in the TV space, products that will be used by tens of millions of people and will help to shape the future of TV," Boxee said.

"For Boxee users, we’re working behind the scenes to ensure there’s minimal impact to your devices.

"However, the beta Cloud DVR functionality we provided to certain Boxee TV users will be discontinued on July 10th. You will not have access to your existing recordings after that date."

D-Link, who currently make the hardware for Boxee, helped the company launch both the Boxee Box and the Cloud DVR, but with Samsung now in control, the future of the deal remains to be seen.

At present, no plans have been issued regarding existing or future Boxee products currently under the deal.

Confirming the acquisition however, Samsung said: “Samsung has acquired key talent and assets from Boxee. This will help us continue to improve the overall user experience across our connected devices.”
