World Cloud Security Day: Genetec outlines best practices for cyber resilience

Tue, 1st Apr 2025

Genetec has outlined several best practices aimed at enhancing cyber resilience for organisations utilising cloud-based systems, in conjunction with World Cloud Security Day.

The company highlights the increasing frequency and sophistication of cyberattacks, urging organisations to look beyond conventional cybersecurity measures. Transitioning critical systems and data to the cloud is presented as a strategy that can bolster protection against vulnerabilities while alleviating the operational load on IT teams.

One of the key recommendations from Genetec is to adopt solutions that support a zero-trust security model. This model ensures that no device, user, or system is automatically trusted, regardless of its location. By requiring verification for every access request, this approach helps reduce the risk of unauthorised access.

Genetec also advises regularly updating and patching systems. Cloud solutions, which automatically provide software and firmware updates, are suggested as a means to address vulnerabilities promptly, maintaining system security effectively.

Implementing granular access control is another recommended practice. Organisations are encouraged to limit user access based on specific roles and responsibilities and to employ strong user authentication measures like multi-factor authentication to minimise the risk of unauthorised system entry.

Attention to data sovereignty and redundancy is emphasised as well. Organisations are advised to select cloud providers with multiple location data centres to ensure data compliance with local regulations and to facilitate disaster recovery. Data redundancy is considered vital for maintaining business continuity in the event of an outage.

The replacement of older proprietary network video recorders (NVRs) with cloud-managed appliances is another recommendation provided by Genetec. This approach can help integrate older, less secure devices into a modern security ecosystem without jeopardising cybersecurity. Appliances like the Genetec Cloudlink line are mentioned as enabling a seamless transition to a cloud-based infrastructure, allowing for gradual upgrades without costly equipment replacements.

Genetec further advises collaboration with trusted technology providers and channel partners who actively monitor security threats and assist in system hardening, ensuring that systems maintain robust security.

Mathieu Chevalier, Principal Security Architect at Genetec, stated, "Cloud solutions are increasingly becoming the preferred choice for businesses looking to get the best of both worlds. By embracing cloud and hybrid-cloud deployments in physical security, organisations can reduce the complexity of maintaining on-premises systems while maintaining a strong cybersecurity posture."
