Matrix NAP Info has activated Ciena's WaveLogic 6 Extreme on the Batam-Jakarta segment of the Matrix Cable System, delivering 1 Tb/s per wavelength on the 1,055 km submarine link.

The move makes Matrix NAP Info one of the first operators in the region to deploy the latest generation of Ciena's coherent optical technology commercially on a live submarine cable system.

Matrix NAP Info is a partnership between Matrix Networks and NAP Info that operates the Matrix Cable System, linking Indonesia to international internet and cloud connections through Singapore. The Batam-Jakarta corridor is a key part of that route and serves as a backbone for domestic and cross-border traffic.

The system uses Ciena's GeoMesh Extreme solution with WaveLogic 6 Extreme coherent optical technology. The upgrade increases throughput on existing fibre infrastructure without requiring additional cable on the route.

The work was carried out with Terrabit Networks, a Ciena-accredited channel partner. Ciena Services handled pre-deployment engineering, the network build-out, and lifecycle management.

Capacity upgrade

The Batam-Jakarta segment now carries 1 Tb/s per wavelength channel, reflecting a wider push by network operators to increase traffic over existing subsea assets. In markets such as Indonesia, where demand for cloud access, content delivery, and data centre connectivity continues to grow, operators are under pressure to expand capacity while controlling infrastructure costs.

Live trial

The deployment followed a live production trial on the Matrix Cable System that achieved sustained 1 Tb/s transmission under operating submarine conditions before commercial activation on the route.

The result is notable because submarine cable upgrades often depend on pushing more traffic through existing systems rather than building entirely new links. Improvements in spectral efficiency can extend a cable's commercial life and defer major capital spending.

Matrix NAP Info said the Batam-Jakarta corridor supports its wider portfolio, including MC-IX, Matrix Data Centre, Matrix Cloud, and Matrix Internet services. The group is positioning the route as part of a broader digital infrastructure base serving enterprise, wholesale, and internet traffic in Indonesia.

Regional demand

Indonesia has become an increasingly important market for international and domestic network investment as digital service usage expands across the archipelago. The country's geography creates strong reliance on submarine infrastructure, both for inter-island connectivity and links to regional hubs such as Singapore.

For equipment suppliers, submarine upgrades are also becoming a larger part of the optical networking market as operators seek higher capacity from installed cable systems. The Batam-Jakarta deployment reflects a broader industry trend of applying more advanced coherent optics to routes already in service.

"Activating 1 Tb/s per wavelength on our Batam-Jakarta submarine segment is not simply a capacity upgrade, it is a statement about where Matrix NAP Info stands in the global connectivity landscape," said Omar Syarif Nasution, Director, Matrix NAP Info.

"By deploying the most advanced coherent optical technology available, we are future-proofing Indonesia's international connectivity backbone and ensuring that our customers have access to the bandwidth they need to compete in the AI and cloud era. We are proud to be among the first operators in Southeast Asia to reach this milestone on a live submarine system," said Nasution.

Ciena described the project as part of rising network demand across Southeast Asia, where data-intensive applications are reshaping traffic patterns and capacity planning. The supplier said Indonesia is playing a more prominent role in regional connectivity as businesses and digital platforms expand their use of cloud and related services.

"Indonesia is emerging as one of the most strategically important connectivity hubs in Asia-Pacific, driven by explosive growth in cloud adoption, AI workloads, and digital services," said Alex Wong, Regional Managing Director, ASEAN, Ciena.

"A pioneer in connecting Indonesia to the rest of the world, Matrix NAP Info is unlocking new levels of capacity on its existing cable system with Ciena's coherent optical technology," said Wong.
