Canonical joins RISC-V Software Ecosystem to boost open-source support

Tue, 5th Dec 2023

Canonical, renowned for Ubuntu, has recently become a member of the RISC-V Software Ecosystem (RISE), a global joint initiative aimed at expediting open-source software support for the nascent RISC-V computing architecture.

Canonical, in its capacity as a trailblazer in offering RISC-V support in Ubuntu, brings to the RISE project a breadth of Linux and open source know-how. Its entrance into the RISE project is sign of increasing acceptance of RISC-V in the commercial area and it will assist in fine-tuning critical open-source technologies such as Ubuntu for RISC-V hardware.

The announcement of Canonical's membership of RISE is in harmony with the company's broader aim to furnish developers and businesses with open-source solutions that are vital for constructing, launching, and escalating applications effectively.

Gordan Marku, the Director of Silicon Alliances at Canonical, expressed his satisfaction at joining RISE, stating, "We are thrilled to join RISE and collaborate with global industry leaders on open source availability on RISC-V. As a member of RISE, Canonical will actively engage in collaborative projects, share its knowledge and resources, and work towards optimising Ubuntu and open source technologies, for RISC-V." Marku further added that joining forces with RISE members will offer novel opportunities to developers and enterprises wishing to exploit the advantages of RISC-V hardware and open source software solutions.

RISE Governing Board chair, Amber Huffman, has warmly welcomed Canonical's leadership and experience in open source software to the RISE project. In her words; "Canonical's decision to join RISE is a testament to the growing importance and opportunity of RISC-V. We look forward to leveraging Canonical's expertise and knowledge in Linux and open source technologies to further drive innovation and collaboration throughout the RISC-V ecosystem in collaboration with RISE members."

The RISE project embodies a new consolidated effort that brings together global industry frontrunners who are resolute in hastening the availability of software for high-performance and power-efficient RISC-V cores running high-level operating systems for a variety of market segments.

Canonical's association with RISE is emblematic of the company's commitment to making Linux easily accessible on RISC-V through Ubuntu, continuing expansion of RISC-V enablement in the coming year and engaging further with the RISC-V ecosystem.
