Wed, 8th May 2024

DE-CIX, the operator of Internet Exchanges (IXs), has shown strong growth in its operations according to its 2023 annual report, with revenues surpassing EURO €63 million, marking a rise of 14% from the previous year. The report also revealed a 23% increase in total traffic volume and connected customer capacity on DE-CIX's Internet Exchanges growing by 14% to over 140 terabits. By the close of the year, the company had linked more than 3,600 networks across the globe.

The interconnection specialist underwent a geographical expansion in 2023, operationalising platforms in an additional 14 metro markets, thus extending its global footprint to over 50 metro markets worldwide. This expansion spanned continents, reaching North America, Africa, Europe, the Middle East, and Asia. Platforms were also put into operation in six DE-CIX-owned IXs, including five in the Nordics and one in India.

Interest in DE-CIX's enterprise-facing services experienced robust growth during the year, marked by a 50% increase in cloud connections and nearly four terabits of booked capacity by the end of the year. Ivo Ivanov, the CEO, stated, "We enable organisations of all types and sizes to provide secure, scalable, and controllable digital experiences for their customers and staff by leveraging the strength and reliability of a global interconnection ecosystem."

In North and Central America, DE-CIX expanded its presence to Mexico in late 2023, further incentivising traffic flows between North and Central America and facilitating the needs of local network operators and enterprises for interconnection and cloud connectivity. Meanwhile, DE-CIX North America saw double-digit growth in network connections, reaching over 500 connections by the close of the year and increasing total customer capacity by 27% to 25 terabits.

Expansion was also noted in Europe, with the Southern European region experiencing an increased customer capacity of 31% and close to 12 terabits in 2023. In Germany, there was a 15% growth at DE-CIX Frankfurt, the largest IX in Europe, where over 16 Tbit/s peak traffic was recorded during the year.

2023 marked DE-CIX's first foray into Africa, with the establishment of two IXs, AF-CIX and ACIX, based in Lagos, Nigeria, and Kinshasa, Democratic Republic of Congo, respectively. Both hubs saw rapid growth in their first year, connecting 34 networks.

In the Asia Pacific region, the flagship IX, DE-CIX Mumbai, reported a 32% data throughput increase during peak times, reaching 1.5 Tbit/s. DE-CIX Delhi recorded 245 Gbit/s peak traffic by the year's end, marking a 24% increase.

Overall, the company has seen consistent growth and expansion, thus setting a foundation for continued performance in the upcoming years. As Ivanov stated, DE-CIX is "working with our excellent team and our valued partners to make this future a reality."
