Getac adopts Sony's SORPLAS for sustainable tech devices

Wed, 30th Oct 2024

Getac has announced its adoption of Sony Semiconductor Solutions' (SSS) SORPLAS into its premium rugged laptops and tablets.

SORPLAS is a type of plastic developed by SSS, which achieves up to a 99 per cent utilisation rate of recycled materials. It is known for its durability and is used in a variety of environments, including high temperatures and humid conditions where plastics typically degrade. The material is not only robust but also designed with aesthetics in mind, making it suitable for both functional and visual applications within and outside the Sony Group.

The introduction of SORPLAS highlights efforts in the technology industry to reduce environmental impact. Production of SORPLAS emits significantly less CO2 compared to virgin flame-retardant polycarbonate resin, and it retains its properties even after repeated recycling. This helps in reducing the environmental footprint of technology manufacturing significantly.

Getac is integrating SORPLAS into its products as part of its sustainability commitments. This began with the S510, the world's first artificial intelligence-ready rugged laptop, and the next generation K120 fully rugged tablet. These initiatives highlight Getac's drive to use post-consumer recycled materials for environmentally responsible design while still meeting the rigorous demands of rugged industry customers.

Eita Yanagisawa, Senior General Manager at Sony Semiconductor Solutions Corporation, expressed the industry's responsibility towards environmental protection, stating, "The technology industry has a collective responsibility to protect our planet for future generations. SORPLAS embodies our commitment to fulfilling this responsibility, utilising cutting-edge recycling technology to achieve an exceptionally high utilisation rate of recycled materials. It is already used extensively in Sony Group's products, and we're excited to bring it to a wider audience through partnerships with other environmentally conscious companies like Getac."

James Hwang, President of Getac Technology Corporation, emphasised the company's commitment to sustainability, "Getac is firmly committed to creating a more sustainable future through environmentally responsible design and manufacturing, and we actively pursue innovation that enables us to achieve our goal. Implementing SORPLAS into our rugged devices is the latest step on this path, and we look forward to working closely with Sony Semiconductor Solutions to bring it to more of our products and solutions going forward, helping to safeguard the future of our planet for future generations."

Getac's latest initiative with SORPLAS reinforces its partnership with SSS to enhance sustainability in technology manufacturing. The company's sustained effort to integrate environmentally-friendly components into its product line highlights its long-term commitment to reducing the ecological impact of its operations.
