New Zealand gears up for Recycling Week 2024 events

Wed, 16th Oct 2024

The upcoming Recycling Week 2024 in New Zealand aims to enhance awareness around waste management from 21st to 27th October.

The annual campaign, which is considered New Zealand's most extensive recycling initiative, focuses this year on understanding waste. It aims to encourage various groups, including businesses, schools, and the public, to think critically about what they discard and to promote waste minimisation.

Recycling Week 2024 will explore the waste minimisation hierarchy, particularly emphasising the importance of avoiding or refusing waste as a priority. Organisers hope participants will scrutinise their disposal habits by asking themselves the central question, "What is in my waste?"

New Zealand generates approximately 17.5 million tonnes of waste each year, a figure organisers believe offers significant scope for reduction. The week-long initiative is part of a broader strategy to lessen the environmental impact by instilling mindfulness regarding waste.

Recycling Week looks beyond recycling to include steps such as avoiding, reducing, reusing, and repairing, before considering recycling as the last resort. The event is keen to teach how various waste management methods can change behaviours and foster positive disposal habits among New Zealanders.

The schedule for Recycling Week includes daily themes such as Procurement Monday, Waste-Free Tuesday, Reusable Wednesday, Rinse & Clean Thursday, Reflection Friday, and Spring Clean Weekend. These focuses aim to offer structured guidance throughout the week, reinforcing the core principles of waste reduction.

Participants will have access to a range of resources, including tools, assets, and educational activities designed to promote community and individual engagement across multiple channels.

A series of events and initiatives will take place throughout New Zealand to support the campaign. SkyCity will highlight the event by lighting the Sky Tower in Recycling Week colours. Digital billboards by LUMO Media will be used to elevate campaign visibility. Further support comes in the form of radio announcements from NZME, aimed at broadening the reach of the campaign message during the week.

Social media activities will also play a crucial role in broadcasting how businesses and individuals are engaging with the initiative, offering a platform to showcase efforts and share stories.

Recycling Week spokespersons urge widespread participation: "Recycling Week is for everyone! Whether you're at home, in your workplace, or part of a local community, there's something for you to get involved with."

As organisers look forward to engaging a broad demographic, the campaign emphasises collaboration in working towards a future where waste is minimised, and resources are used more efficiently.
