Solid State Logic expands System T with OSC support

Solid State Logic has released the V4.3 update for its System T broadcast mixing platform, adding broader Open Sound Control integration for third-party control.

The release also brings meter bridge changes, expanded bussing, Permanent Path Linking, SolidPitch vocal processing and remote power-off functions.

System T is used in broadcast audio production, where operators often need to manage multiple consoles, DSP engines and remote workflows across IP networks. The new OSC support is designed to let broadcasters connect external controllers and mixers to System T without relying on dedicated SSL hardware for every use case.

Third-party systems can now control console parameters through the OSC protocol over standard IP connectivity. Users can map System T functions to any OSC-compliant mixer or controller, which could make it easier to deploy temporary or smaller-scale setups in venues or remote production environments.

The integration covers a wide range of core controls, including faders, mutes, PFL, AFL and path labels. It can also be extended to other console functions already available through SSL's Event Manager toolset.

Event Manager now supports native OSC inputs and outputs, allowing OSC messages to trigger and respond to events alongside GPIO, Ember+ and MIDI signals. The update also adds native OSC support for scene automation, enabling scenes to be fired directly by number for productions that rely on snapshot-style recall.

Another part of the release extends remote control to SSL's Net I/O ecosystem. Users can now set the gain of any SSL preamp via the Tempest Control App using OSC, giving operators wider control over microphones and stagebox infrastructure from remote locations.

Berny Carpenter, Product Manager at Solid State Logic, said the changes reflect a shift in how broadcast teams organise control in distributed productions.

"As broadcast workflows evolve, control needs to be increasingly flexible," Carpenter said.

He said System T already supports multiple connected control surfaces, while the Tempest Control App provides full access to DSP engines in studios and remote locations. Increasingly, though, operators need limited, task-specific control rather than full console access.

"System T already allows multiple control surfaces to connect with one another and SSL's fully-featured Tempest Control App (TCA) also provides full, comprehensive control of any DSP engine in a studio or remote location. But as distributed workflows become more commonplace, remote operators often need just a limited amount of control to manage specific elements of the audio chain.

Comprehensive OSC integration opens up SSL's functionality to remotely control System T console parameters without requiring dedicated SSL hardware, making throw-down systems much easier to deploy using a variety of external devices. For example, a remote operator at a venue might just need console monitor functionality or access to select local faders - all that can be controlled via a compact hardware controller for smaller setups. That flexibility becomes a real benefit in environments wherever and whenever operational flexibility is desirable."

Metering changes

A separate set of changes focuses on the System T meter bridge. Operators using S500 and S500m consoles can now use a follow active fader bank option for meter bridge sources, allowing metering to track source and surface layout changes more dynamically.

The meter bridge can also now display SSL's Bus Compressor Effect Meter, placing overall dynamics information directly in the operator's line of sight rather than elsewhere on the surface.

More buses

The V4.3 release also extends bussing for productions that need higher bus counts, including large theatre and broadcast entertainment shows. Track buses now support the same independent per-channel send level control already available on stem and aux buses, increasing the number of separately controllable sends in a production.

SSL has also brought over some features from its live console range. Permanent Path Linking allows users to create up to 48 permanent link groups between paths, mirroring temporary Path Links while allowing independent filters where needed.

Showfile capacity has also increased to up to 500 scenes, supporting productions with large numbers of cues and recalls.

Vocal effects

Another addition is SolidPitch, an onboard vocal tuning and processing effect now available across the System T ecosystem, including the Virtual Tempest Engine. The feature covers uses ranging from subtle pitch correction to more obvious vocal treatments, and includes effects such as a tuner, doubler and harmoniser.

The update also introduces remote power-off functionality, allowing users to shut down consoles from a distance. This can help production teams schedule equipment to power down safely at the end of a broadcast or live event.

Overall, the release expands the ways System T can be controlled and configured, especially in modular and temporary production setups where full-size desks or dedicated hardware may not be practical.
