Veeam extends data platform to support Proxmox VE for SMBs
In a significant development for small and medium-sized businesses (SMBs) and service providers, Veeam has announced the extension of its Veeam Data Platform to now support Proxmox VE. This new capability aims to enhance data protection and offer greater flexibility in data management and cyber resiliency.
Veeam, a leading company in data protection and ransomware recovery, unveiled this support in response to popular demand from its existing customer base. The announcement underscores Veeam's commitment to providing data freedom and ensuring that organisations can choose business platforms that are best suited to their needs. The new support will be showcased at the VeeamON 2024 event, set to take place from June 3-5 at the Diplomat Resort in Fort Lauderdale, Florida, and online.
John Jester, Chief Revenue Officer at Veeam, highlighted the importance of the new integration, saying, "This introduction of Proxmox VE support extends our comprehensive data management solution to address the challenges currently faced by our customers. As we continue to advocate for data freedom and choice for our 450,000 customers, backup for Proxmox VE provides them with an additional option for the tools and flexibility they need to optimise their data management practices, enable cyber resiliency, and accelerate business growth."
The Veeam Data Platform is expanding to support Proxmox VE, further adding to its already robust compatibility with various virtualisation and cloud environments. Currently, Veeam supports VMware vSphere, Microsoft Hyper-V, Nutanix AHV, Oracle Linux Virtualization Manager, Red Hat Virtualization, AWS, Azure, and Google Cloud. This extension offers a comprehensive data management solution that ensures data security, data recovery, and freedom from platform or cloud lock-in.
Key features of Veeam's Proxmox VE support include immutable backups, uncompromised backup performance, and advanced granular recovery capabilities. Immutable backups allow on-premises and cloud backups of Proxmox VE VMs to remain safe from ransomware encryption, accidental deletions, and cyberattacks. The platform also offers storage-based immutability and support for tape and rotated drives to achieve airgap at minimal cost.
The backup performance is enhanced by advanced changed block tracking (CBT) integration and hot add backup mode, minimising disruptions and ensuring efficient day-to-day operations. Additionally, the Veeam BitLooker feature improves backup performance and storage space conservation by automatically excluding unused disk blocks.
Storage flexibility is another significant advantage, with support for all Veeam Backup & Replication backup repository types, including hardened repositories and object storage. This allows customers to create backup repositories that suit their specific needs and budgets. Furthermore, the freedom of full VM recovery ensures that VMs can be restored quickly between key virtualisation platforms and Proxmox VE, reducing downtime and maximising productivity.
Martin Maurer, CEO of Proxmox, expressed excitement about the new support, stating, "Veeam's upcoming support for Proxmox is a testament to the customer value delivered by Proxmox VE during this time of market transformation. We are excited that so many customers are making it clear that Proxmox VE is the hypervisor that meets their business objectives."
Christophe Bertrand, Practice Director at ESG, also praised Veeam's move, citing the extended support as a logical step in addressing the needs of the SMB market. "Providing resilience to Proxmox VE environments is not only logical but also confirms Veeam's focus on customer requirements around data protection and mobility," he said.
The general availability for Proxmox VE support is expected in Q3 2024. Those interested in experiencing a live hands-on demo of Proxmox VE backup and learning about the latest trends in data protection and ransomware recovery can attend the 10th annual VeeamON event either onsite or virtually.
