Hitachi Vantara's VSP One Block tops in performance, efficiency
Hitachi Vantara's new Virtual Storage Platform One (VSP One) Block storage appliance has been recognised as the top storage solution for performance and energy efficiency in the ENERGY STAR NVSS Disk Online 4 category.
The certification, awarded by ENERGY STAR, a programme jointly run by the Environmental Protection Agency (EPA) and the Department of Energy (DOE), highlights VSP One Block's leadership in sustainable technology. Overall, Hitachi Vantara holds the top three positions in this category.
The recognition comes at a time when businesses are increasingly focused on improving the sustainability of their operations. According to a recent survey, 68% of IT decision-makers expressed concern about the impact of AI and machine learning on their organisations' energy use and carbon footprint. Moreover, 77% of respondents indicated that legacy data architectures negatively affected their sustainability performance.
Hitachi Vantara also recently received a Gold Medal rating for sustainability from EcoVadis, an organisation that assesses corporate social responsibility and sustainability practices. This accolade further underscores Hitachi Vantara's commitment to reducing the carbon footprint of its products while maintaining high performance standards. Chief Product Officer, Octavian Tanase, commented, "At Hitachi Vantara, we understand the growing importance of energy efficiency in today's data-driven world, and we are committed to helping our customers meet their performance needs while also reducing their environmental impact."
The ENERGY STAR certification process evaluates storage solutions based on their IOPS per watt, a crucial metric for gauging the efficiency of input/output operations relative to energy consumption. The VSP One Block 28 model ranked highest with 538 IOPS per watt, followed by the Virtual Storage Platform One Block 26 at 409 IOPS per watt, and the Virtual Storage Platform E1090 at 368 IOPS per watt.
The VSP One Block storage appliance is designed to meet the evolving needs of mid-sized enterprises. It offers three dedicated models that provide a common data plane across both structured and unstructured data in block storage. This design aims to transform data management by enhancing simplicity, security, and sustainability. "Our Virtual Storage Platform One Block storage appliance exemplifies our vision for the future, delivering powerful, reliable, and eco-friendly solutions that drive value for our customers and help significantly reduce carbon emissions," Tanase added.
The platform enhances performance, allowing organisations to consolidate more workloads onto fewer systems. This consolidation not only improves operational efficiency but also helps businesses achieve green data centre goals by minimising their environmental footprint. The appliance features Dynamic Carbon Reduction technology, which reduces energy consumption by switching CPUs into eco-mode during periods of low activity. Additionally, the always-on compression allows the system to switch from inline data reduction to post-processing, which further reduces energy consumption and contributes to lowering CO2 emissions by as much as 30-40%.
Hitachi Vantara's storage arrays have also obtained Carbon Footprint of Products (CFP) certification under the Sustainable Management Promotion Organization (SuMPO) environmental labelling programme, ensuring transparency and environmental accountability. All mid-market solutions from Hitachi Vantara are certified by ENERGY STAR for their IOPS per watt, highlighting the energy efficiency and performance of these products.
For more than a decade, Hitachi Vantara storage arrays have continually worked to reduce greenhouse gas emissions throughout the entire system lifecycle—from procurement of materials to production, logistics, use, disposal, and recycling. The recent accolades from ENERGY STAR and EcoVadis reflect the company's long-standing commitment to sustainable innovation and its efforts to align with global environmental goals.
