Genesis Energy deploys Databricks to boost AI & data strategy
Genesis Energy has disclosed plans to adopt the Databricks Data Intelligence Platform to modernise its data operations and expand the application of artificial intelligence (AI) throughout the business.
This initiative aims to streamline data management, introduce AI-driven trading strategies, improve customer service, and boost productivity via generative AI capabilities. The move is a significant pillar of Genesis Energy's Gen35 strategy, underlining its position on data as a critical business asset.
Transformation goals
Genesis Energy will consolidate its data infrastructure using the Databricks Data Intelligence Platform and further develop its AI Enablement Hub, which was established earlier in the year. The AI Enablement Hub functions as a central resource to standardise, expedite, and broaden the use of AI tools and applications across the organisation.
The Databricks Data Intelligence Platform is designed to broaden access to data and AI for organisations, supporting the use of analytics, AI-powered applications, and agents. The platform is built on open source technologies and aims to drive business innovation while seeking to increase revenue, reduce costs, and mitigate risks.
"At Genesis, we're powering a sustainable, thriving Aotearoa. Our transformation programme is anchored around building a people-led, AI-enabled organisation-one where teams lead with insight, creativity, and purpose, supported by data and technology. By treating data as a strategic asset, we're driving real outcomes, accelerating the energy transition, and ensuring Genesis remains future-fit in a rapidly changing world," said Malcolm Johns, CEO of Genesis Energy.
Ed Hyde, Chief Technology & Transformation Officer at Genesis Energy, commented on the company's intentions regarding the use of AI and data within the organisation. "With Databricks, we are accelerating the ability to embed Data and AI in the way we operate, innovate, and support customers, while ensuring our people are empowered with the skills to thrive in this new era," Hyde said.
Workforce focus
One focus of this partnership is to ensure Genesis Energy staff are prepared to use new data and AI tools in their daily work. The company is rolling out programmes designed to raise the skill levels of over 100 employees. These staff will participate in the Databricks Data + AI Academy to deepen their knowledge and enhance their practical abilities with the technology.
Carol Brown, Country Manager of Databricks NZ, commented on the collaboration's broader impact: "We are excited to partner with Genesis Energy as they pave the way for accessible and scalable AI in the energy sector. Together, we will help create a platform that not only transforms core business processes but also inspires innovation that benefits customers and the wider New Zealand community."
Commitment to wider transformation
The adoption of Databricks' platform also reflects Genesis Energy's broader goals for digital transformation, including advancing intelligent asset management and encouraging staff to work more effectively through new technologies.
Genesis Energy is New Zealand's largest retailer of electricity and natural gas. The company aims to use data-driven strategies to support its operational objectives and national sustainability goals. By investing in staff training and technological upgrades, it expects to reinforce its capacity to manage change and remain competitive in a shifting energy landscape.
The collaboration with Databricks will support Genesis Energy's stated commitment to treat data as a strategic enterprise asset, aiming to drive innovation and operational excellence while contributing to a more sustainable energy sector in New Zealand.
